Last night, (Friday 25 July) over the course of several hours, I had email exchanges with various members of the milblog community, including Matt Burden of Blackfive, regarding the original email.
The content, or subject matter, of the email is one Army officer's view of the events of the day.
True or not, the email itself is genuine and was sent by a member of the military.
Snopes has it listed as false, based on their investigations. However there is a final entry on the Snopes page that should be noted.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/afghanistan.asp
Reading the Snopes page would leave one with the impression that the email is false, but the last few paragraphs on Snopes are the enigma.
The author of the email was contacted by Snopes.
He responded and asked that the email be removed because it was intended only for his family. (Good luck with that)
Based on that, the email itself is real.
It is the CONTENT of the email that Snopes is listing as false, not the fact that the email was sent.
When the text of the email was posted on Blackfive, Matt had removed all identifying references, including the Army officer's name, out of respect for his privacy.
When the email itself began its journey through the MAIL system, the person who forwarded it did not give the Army officer the same courtesy.
Here’s a tip for future events of this nature:
REMOVE ALL REFERENCES TO IDENTITY.
We owe the members of our military at least that much and it will hinder Snopes investigations which will result in them being unable to give a definite true or false.
(Whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen.)
I will respectfully ask that you backtrack and send this back up the line to your respective email loops.

Written by the man who was actually going to run for the same seat. This is too good not to share.
That’s it.
No dog and pony show, no crap sandwich, no whizzing on your leg.
This one is straightforward and simple. David Bellavia for Congress. This one is nothing more than a stand for freedom, a case of doing what the country needs done, not what the politicians want done.
It was supposed to be my seat.
At least it was in my fantasy land. Tom Reynolds was going to serve another several years, I was going to make some friends in Buffalo, I was going to make some more money, and if I was still in the district when Reynolds retired – if redistricting didn’t slice and dice the 26th out of existence – I was going to take a run at it.
But Tom Reynolds has decided to bail out early, and somebody better than me has come along.
This one isn’t even hard – David Bellavia for Congress.
The background is this. The 26th District of New York has been represented in recent congresses by Tom Reynolds, Bill Paxon and Jack Kemp. That’s a pretty good line-up. It gets better if you consider that part of it was also represented by the great Barber Conable.
What all that means is that this little piece of upstate New York, a swath that generally extends east from Buffalo, has had an unbroken string of unusually powerful and unusually talented congressmen. Tom Reynolds was in the thick of the House leadership, Bill Paxon should have been speaker of the House – on the way to the presidency – Jack Kemp was a party star and vice-presidential candidate, and Barber Conable was one of the most powerful and noble men of his time.
That’s big stuff.
And big shoes.
And David Bellavia can fill them.
MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA -- In stark contrast to his opponents' schedules, Fred Thompson made only one campaign stop today, at a home for veterans in Marshalltown, Iowa. "We decided that we would come out here and wish these veterans a happy new year and thank them for the service to their country," Thompson said.
Josh Painter over at RedState.com has a welcome message for the Tancredo supporters who have signed on to the FDT Campaign.
My good friend 2ndDivisionVet over at FreeRepublic, has a message for everyone. Here's an excerpt;
FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.
During my time in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst, I served under both Presidents Carter and Reagan (as my commanders in chief). Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.
I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.
Another article with a ground truth opinion:
Remember the guy who asked Fred Thompson, at a campaign stop, if he really wanted to be President?
He contacted Jim Geraghty with his opinion of the answer and, it seems, he was pretty darned happy with it. Here’s an excerpt:
It was a great answer. At points during the answer I was ashamed I had asked the question. I knew the answer. Do I really want to support a candidate who lives to be President? Is that type of candidate really interested in serving the nation or serving his own self-interest? Sen. Thompson positioned himself as willing to serve, not for an enlarged ego, but out of a deep desire to serve his nation. He has a desire to make our nation better for his children and grandchildren. Far from a slick Branson like presentation, he presented himself as a dedicated patriot willing to serve if we, the American people, were willing to have him do so. He refuses to be a President under false pretenses. He is not leading us into a shotgun relationship. He understands that under the founder’s concept of the social contract, both parties must be fully aware of the terms of the contract when entering into the agreement. If the American people do not want him to be President, he is not going to trick us into agreeing to him. As I said, the answer was refreshing. It was a great answer.
That is, I have to say again, the exact opposite of what the MSM reported. I keep wondering how hard it is to actually be a journalist these days. It seems that they don’t have to pay much attention to whatever they’re covering and can pretty much write anything they like without worrying about losing their jobs.
At ten minutes into the video, Fred rips the NEA, MoveOn.org, and the ACLU a new one and calls out the anti-victory crowd in Congress.
Fred Thompson on
The United States is committed to the security of Israel and the safety of the Israeli people. The historical, familial and cultural ties of our peoples are the basis of this commitment. It is strengthened by the shared values and shared interests of our nations. Our mutual goal is an economically and militarily strong Israel at peace with its neighbors. We must exercise our traditional leadership role in the region and continue our longstanding support to Israel to achieve this vision.
Anyone who has heard me speak knows my firm commitment to what I call “First Principles.” These grow out of the documents of our Nation’s founding and the wisdom of the ages. They are core beliefs that guide my approach to the issues that are crucial to our Nation’s future.
The first responsibility of government is to protect the American people, the homeland, and our way of life. Today we face the urgent threat of radical Islamic terrorists. Al Qaeda is committed to attacking us here at home, and wants to use weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to kill millions. We must never give them that opportunity. We must defeat the terrorists abroad, and that begins in Iraq and Afghanistan—the central fronts in this global war. We must show the world we have the will to fight and win. A weakened America - or an America that appears weaker - will only encourage further attacks. We must persevere. As Commander-in-Chief, the president must ensure the United States has the means to achieve victory. Presidential leadership requires talking to the American people about these stakes, mapping out a clear vision for success, and devising a comprehensive strategy for achieving it. I am committed to:
- A larger, more capable, and more modern military that can defeat terrorists, deter adversaries, and defend the U.S. and our interests.
- A missile defense system that can protect the U.S. and our allies from long-range ballistic missiles.
- An enhanced intelligence community, with robust human-intelligence capabilities, focused on terrorism and proliferation.
- A robust approach to homeland security that will protect our nation from terrorists and WMD, regardless of where they come from.
- A strengthened system of global alliances to better combat terrorists, proliferators, and traditional threats to our interests.
- A judicial system that deals with the realities of terrorists and unlawful enemy combatants.
